Birmingham (Alabama)

Birmingham (pronounced ) is the largest city in the U.S. state of Alabama and is the county seat of Jefferson County. The population of the city is 242,820 as of the 2000 census, but has declined to 229,424 according to the 2006 estimate. The Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Area, as of the 2006 census estimates, has a population of 1,100,019. It also the largest city in the Birmingham-Hoover-Cullman Combined Statistical Area, colloquially known as Greater Birmingham,which contains roughly one quarter of the population in Alabama.

Birmingham (en anglais ) est la plus grande ville de l'État de l'Alabama, aux États-Unis. Elle est le siège du comté de Jefferson, mais des portions de la ville sont aussi situées dans le comté de Shelby. Al censimento del 2002 la popolazione arrivava a 242.820 abitanti, ma nel 2005 si è stimato un calo a 231.483 abitanti. La città costituise il nucleo di un'area metropolitana nota come Greater Birmingham (Grande Birmingham) abitata da 1.180.206 persone, vale a dire circa un quarto dell'intera popolazione dello Stato.
