Burma, officially the Union of Myanmar (Burmese: ), is the largest country by geographical area in mainland Southeast Asia.Burma achieved independence from the United Kingdom on 4 January 1948, as the “Union of Burma.” It became the “Socialist Republic of the Union of Burma” on 4 January 1974, before reverting to the “Union of Burma” on 23 September 1988. On 18 June 1989, the State Law and Order Restoration Council adopted the name “Union of Myanmar.” This was recognised by the United Nations, but not by the US or UK Governments.

La Birmanie ou Myanmar est un pays d'Asie du Sud-Est continentale ayant une frontière commune avec l'Inde, le Bangladesh, le Laos, la Chine et la Thaïlande. Elle est bordée par la mer d'Andaman au sud et par le golfe du Bengale au sud-ouest, avec environ 2000 kilomètres de côtes au total.

La Birmania (dal 18 giugno 1989 ufficialmente Myanmar, in inglese Burma), è uno Stato dell'Asia sudorientale. Occupa parte della costa occidentale della penisola indocinese, è affacciato sul Golfo del Bengala e sul mar delle Andamane e confina da ovest a est con Bangladesh, India, Cina, Laos e Thailandia. Attualmente, dopo il colpo di stato del 1988, è sotto il regime militare di Than Shwe.
