William Henry Gates III (born October 28, 1955) is an American entrepreneur, philanthropist and chairman of Microsoft, the software company he founded with Paul Allen. During his career at Microsoft he has held the positions of CEO and chief software architect, and he remains the largest individual shareholder with more than 8% of the common stock.

William Henry Gates III dit Bill Gates (né le 28 octobre 1955 à Seattle) est un informaticien américain, pionnier dans le domaine de la micro informatique. Il a fondé en 1975, à l'âge de 20 ans, avec son ami Paul Allen, la société de logiciels de micro-informatique Micro-Soft (renommée depuis Microsoft). Son entreprise a acheté le système d'exploitation QDOS pour en faire MS-DOS, puis a conçu Windows, tous deux en situation de quasi-monopole mondial. Il est également devenu, grâce au succès commercial de Microsoft, l'homme le plus riche du monde de 1996 à 2007 avec une fortune personnelle estimée à plus de 59 milliards de dollars. Il est Chevalier de l'Empire Britannique. Bill Gates a quitté Microsoft le 27 juin 2008 pour se consacrer à sa fondation humanitaire.

Gates gilt nach neusten Einschätzungen als reichster Mann der Welt mit einem Vermögen von etwa 56,0 Milliarden US-Dollar. Er gründete 1975 gemeinsam mit Paul Allen die Microsoft Corporation. Er besitzt etwa 1,1 Milliarden Aktien von Microsoft (etwa 41 Mrd. US $), was gut 10 es  Grundkapitals entspricht, ist Aufsichtsratsvorsitzender und war bis 2006 Leiter der Entwicklungsabteilung („Chief Software Architect“) des Unternehmens. Seit Dezember 2004 ist er darüber hinaus Mitglied des Aufsichtsrats (Board of Directors) von Berkshire Hathaway, der Investmentholding von Warren Buffett, der nach Helú und Gates als drittreichster Mann der Welt gilt. Zu seinem weiteren Aktienbesitz zählen z. B. Beteiligungen an McDonald's in Höhe von rund 35 Millionen US-Dollar (2007), am Kraftfahrzeugversicherer Progressive und dem Fotokonzern Eastman Kodak. Am 12. September 2007 verabschiedete er sich auf der Unternehmensversammlung offiziell von Microsoft.
