The Belgian waffle is a type of waffle identified by its larger size, lighter batter and higher grid pattern which forms deep pockets and has larger squares than other types. In Belgium, there are a number of different types of waffle, including the Brussels waffle, the Liège waffle and the stroopwafel; what is known in North America as the "Belgian waffle" is most similar to the Brussels waffle. As opposed to a traditional waffle, the Belgian waffle attributes its height to the use of yeast batter instead of a pancake batter. Though one of the main ingredients in Belgian waffles is yeast, this ingredient can be substituted with self rising flour. Most recipes call for yeast and eggs. These ingredients make Belgian waffles different from standard waffles and pancakes. In North America, they are often eaten as a breakfast food, and are usually served with butter (or margarine) and maple syrup or with vanilla ice cream and fresh fruit (such as strawberries) as a dessert. In Belgium they are more commonly served as a snack or light dessert.

Waffeln sind in ihrer einfachsten Form (Oblate) ein im Wesentlichen aus Mehl und Wasser bestehendes, flaches Gebäck, das zwischen zwei heißen Eisen (Waffeleisen) gebacken wird. Es gibt zahlreiche, durch Form und Rezeptur unterschiedliche Variationen. Beliebte Varianten sind das Bestreuen mit Puder- bzw. Staubzucker oder das Anrichten mit Schlagsahne. Erdbeeren oder Sauerkirschen werden häufig als heißes Kompott zu Waffeln gereicht.

Une gaufre est un type de pâtisserie cuit dans un moule à deux faces croisillonnées (« moule à gaufres »).

En våffla är en sorts bakverk, maträtt och efterrätt. Formen på våfflan är fyrkantig eller rund, större våffeljärn producerar ibland fem sammanhängande hjärtformiga våfflor, som är lätta att lösgöra från varandra. Ordet är känt sedan 1642 och kommer från tyskans Waffel, med samma betydelse, men sattes antagligen av förfäder i samband med Vår Fru (Jungfru Maria). Våfflor är än idag i en stor del av Sveriges hushåll en vanlig rätt på Våffeldagen, det vill säga Jungfru Marie bebådelsedag som firas den 25 mars.

• pojawiają się też wafle zastępujące chleb (na nim można położyć jak na chlebie plaster wędliny), wafle te są np. ryżowe
