بيروت هي عاصمة وأكبر مدن  الجمهورية اللبنانية، تقع على الساحل الشرقي للبحر الابيض المتوسط. تتركَز فيها معظم المرافق الحيوية من صناعة وتجارة وخدمات. تعتبر مركز ثقافي مهم للبنان و للعالم العربي، إذ يقع فيها عدد كبير من الجامعات ودور النشر. يصل عدد سكانها مع ضواحيها إلى أكثر من مليوني نسمة.
