(2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl, or (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxidanyl or TEMPO is a chemical compound with the formula (CH₂)₃(CMe₂)₂NO (see diagram). This heterocycle is a red-orange, sublimable solid. As a stable radical, it has applications throughout chemistry and biochemistry. TEMPO was discovered by Lebedev and Kazarnowskii in 1960. It is prepared by oxidation of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine. TEMPO is widely used as a radical trap, as a structural probe for biological systems in conjunction with electron spin resonance spectroscopy, as a reagent in organic synthesis, and as a mediator in controlled free radical polymerization. The stability of this radical is attributed to the steric protection provided by the four  methyl groups adjacent to the nitroxyl group.

In musical terminology, tempo (Italian for time, plural: tempi) is the speed or pace of a given piece. Tempo is a crucial element of any musical composition, as it can affect the mood and difficulty of a piece.

Der Begriff bpm, (BPM) als Abkürzung für Englisch beats per minute, Schläge pro Minute, ist eine andere Bezeichnung für das Maß MM („Mälzels Metronom“) für das Tempo eines Musikstücks. Gemeint ist damit die Anzahl der Zählzeiten oder betonten Beats pro Minute. Die Zählzeiten entsprechen in der Regel Viertelnoten (bei Takten wie 4/4, 3/4, 2/4), bei zusammengesetzten Takten (6/8, 9/8, 12/8) werden üblicherweise drei Achtel (eine punktierte Viertelnote) als ein Beat zusammengefasst. Als Frequenzangabe entspricht ein bpm 1/60 Hz.

Le battement par minute, couramment abrégé par le sigle bpm (en anglais beat per minute) est une unité de mesure utilisée pour exprimer le tempo de la musique ou le rythme cardiaque, quantifié par le nombre de battements se produisant en une minute.

Taktslag per minut, förkortat bpm (engelska beats per minute), antalet taktslag per minut i till exempel ett musikstycke eller hos hjärtat. Det är ett sätt att definiera ett musikstyckes tempo.
