Bayonne

Bayonne (French: Bayonne, pronounced ; Gascon Occitan and Basque: Baiona) is a city and commune of southwest France at the confluence of the Nive and Adour rivers, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques département, of which it is a sous-préfecture. Together with nearby Anglet, Biarritz, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, and several smaller communes, Bayonne forms an urban area with 178,965 inhabitants at the 1999 census, 40,078 of whom lived in the city of Bayonne proper (44,300 as of 2004 estimates). The communes of Bayonne, Biarritz, and Anglet have joined into an intercommunal entity called the Communauté d'agglomération de Bayonne-Anglet-Biarritz.

Bayonne (baskisch und okzitanisch  für Guter Hafen, lat. Lapurdum) ist eine Stadt in der französischen Region Aquitanien und mit 40.078 Einwohnern (1999) nach Pau die zweitgrößte Stadt im Département Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Die Stadt ist Sitz der Unterpräfektur (frz. Sous-préfecture) des Arrondissements Bayonne, dieses besteht aus 19 Kantonen, sie ist Hauptort (frz.: chef-lieu) der Kantone Bayonne-Est, Bayonne-Nord und Bayonne-Ouest.Bayonne liegt im französischen Teil des Baskenlandes am Zusammenfluss der Flüsse Adour und Nive. Bedeutende Wirtschaftszweige sind die metallurgische und die chemische Industrie. Bayonne ist Bischofssitz im gleichnamigen Bistum. Nach der Stadt Bayonne ist die auf einen Gewehrschaft aufzusetzende Stoßwaffe (sog. Bajonett) benannt.

Bayonne è una città francese di 40.078 abitanti situata nel dipartimento dei Pirenei atlantici nella regione dell'Aquitania. ll suo nome basco è Baiona (pronuncia fonetica) mentre quello guascone è ugualmente Baiona (ma pronunciato "Bayoune"). I suoi abitanti si chiamano bayonnais ed il suo motto è «nunquam polluta» (latino mai infangata), in riferimento ai numerosi e vani tentativi di conquista nei suoi confronti nel corso dei secoli.La città fa parte della regione basca del Labourd.
