At the Battle of Vyazma (November 3, 1812), the hindmost corps of Napoleon’s retreating Grande Armee were defeated by the Russians commanded by General Mikhail Andreyevich Miloradovich. Although the French succeeded in thwarting Miloradovich’s initial attempt to isolate and destroy the I Corps of Marshal Louis Nicolas Davout, they remained under pressure from the Russians for the rest of the battle, retiring under fire in a partial state of disorganization and suffering heavy casualties.
