Battle of Jutland

The Battle of Jutland (German: Skagerrakschlacht (Battle of the Skagerrak); Danish: Søslaget ved Jylland / Søslaget om Skagerrak) was the largest naval battle of World War I and the only full-scale clash of battleships in that war. It was fought on 31 May–1 June, 1916, in the North Sea near Jutland, the northward-pointing peninsular mainland of Denmark. The combatants were the Imperial German Navy's High Seas Fleet commanded by Vice Admiral Reinhard Scheer and the Royal Navy’s British Grand Fleet commanded by Admiral Sir John Jellicoe. The intention of the German fleet was to lure out, trap and destroy a portion of the Grand Fleet, as the Germans were insufficient in number to engage the entire British fleet at one time. This formed part of their larger strategy of breaking the British naval blockade of the North Sea and allowing German mercantile shipping to operate again. The Royal Navy, on the other hand, was pursuing a strategy seeking to engage and cripple the High Seas Fleet and keep the German force bottled up and away from their own shipping lanes.

Die Seeschlacht vor dem Skagerrak war die größte Seeschlacht des Ersten Weltkrieges zwischen der deutschen Hochseeflotte und der Grand Fleet der Royal Navy vom 31. Mai 1916 bis zum 1. Juni 1916 in den Gewässern vor Jütland. Sie wird im Englischen als Battle of Jutland (deutsch: Schlacht von Jütland) bezeichnet und war die größte Flottenschlacht zwischen Großkampfschiffen, die überwiegend bei Tageslicht ausgefochten wurde.

Bitwa jutlandzka, nazywana też w Niemczech "bitwą na Skagerraku" (Skaggerakschlacht) miała miejsce od 31 maja do 1 czerwca 1916. Było to jedyne starcie okrętów liniowych podczas I wojny światowej, pomiędzy niemiecką flotą liniową Hochseeflotte i brytyjską Grand Fleet. Bitwa jutlandzka była próbą realizacji idei wielkiego rozstrzygającego starcia flot liniowych, mającego się zakończyć w założeniu zniszczeniem jednej floty. Starcie nie przyniosło jednak rozstrzygnięcia i obie strony ogłosiły zwycięstwo.

Ютла́ндское сраже́ние (31 мая — 1 июня 1916) — крупнейшее морское сражение Первой мировой войны между немецким и британским флотом. Произошло в Северном море близ датского полуострова Ютландия. Немцы планировали выманить в море часть британского флота и уничтожить его. 1-я Разведывательная группа (линейные крейсера) Хиппера должна была произвести обстрел побережья Британии, а затем навести появившиеся корабли Королевского Флота на свои основные силы.
