Batanes

The Province of Batanes is the northernmost and the smallest province of the Philippine Republic, both in terms of population and land area. The provincial capital is Basco.The province is composed of ten islands (called the Batanes Islands) located about 162 km north of the Luzon mainland in the Luzon Strait and is part of the Cagayan Valley region in Luzon. Of this island group, the largest and most economically important are Itbayat, Batan and Sabtang.The Batanes Islands are separated from the Babuyan Islands of Cagayan Province by the Balintang Channel and from Taiwan by the Bashi Channel.

Insgesamt lebten im Jahr 2000 16.467 Einwohner auf den Inseln, die eine Fläche von 209,3 km² besitzen. Dadurch ergibt sich eine Bevölkerungsdichte von 79 Einwohnern pro km².

I Batanes (209 km² e 12000 ab.) sono la provincia più piccola delle Filippine, in termini sia di popolazione che di area. La provincia è formata dalle isole Itbayat, Sabtang e Batan, oltre ad alcune altre isole minori, formanti l'arcipelago di Batan. Il capoluogo è Basco. Le principali risorse della provincia sono l'agricoltura, la pesca ed i giacimenti di carbone.

Batanes is de meeste noordelijke provincie van de Filipijnen. De provincie maakt onderdeel uit van regio II (Cagayan Valley). De Batan-eilanden, die samen de provincie vormen, liggen in de Luzonsstraat op zo'n 190 km ten zuiden van Taiwan. De hoofdstad van de provincie is Basco op het eiland Batan. Batanes had volgens de laatste officiële telling in 2000 16.467 inwoners op een oppervlakte van 209,3 km² en is daarmee zowel qua landoppervlakte als inwonertal de kleinste provincie van het land.
