Basic Input Output System

BIOS (pronounced ), in computing, stands for Basic Input/Output System. The term is incorrectly known as Binary Input/Output System, Basic Integrated Operating System and occasionally Built In Operating System. BIOS refers to the firmware code run by a personal computer when first powered on. The primary function of the BIOS is to identify and initiate component hardware, (such as hard drives, floppies, and CDs). This is to prepare the machine so other software programs stored on various media can load, execute, and assume control of the PC. This process is known as booting, or booting up, which is short for bootstrapping.

Tous les ordinateurs, y compris ceux qui existaient bien avant l'invention du PC (par exemple IBM 1130 et 1800), possèdaient par définition un BIOS. Toutefois, depuis 1981, ce mot désigne plus spécifiquement celui de l'IBM PC. Dans ce contexte : Au sens strict, le Basic Input Output System ou BIOS (système élémentaire d'entrée/sortie) est un ensemble de fonctions, contenu dans la mémoire morte (ROM) de la carte mère servant à effectuer des opérations élémentaires (écrire un caractère à l'écran, lire un secteur sur un disque, etc...). Le terme est souvent utilisé pour décrire l'ensemble du « firmware » ou « microcode » (logiciel embarqué) d'une carte mère. Le BIOS est presque toujours développé par le fabricant de cette carte mère car il contient les routines élémentaires pour effectuer les opérations simples d'entrée/sorties évoquées ci-dessus.

Als Basic Input Output System (BIOS) bezeichnet man die Firmware bei x86-PCs (andere Systeme s. u. im Kapitel Vergleichbare Konzepte). Aus technischer Sicht handelt es sich beim BIOS um ein Programm, das in einem nichtflüchtigen Speicher auf der Hauptplatine des PCs abgelegt ist und das unmittelbar nach dessen Einschalten zur Ausführung gelangt. Es ist unter anderem die Aufgabe des BIOS, den PC zunächst „zum Leben zu erwecken“ und im Anschluss das Booten eines Betriebssystems einzuleiten. Dass das griechische Wort Bios (geschrieben: βιός) zugleich Leben bedeutet, ist vor diesem Hintergrund vermutlich ein „beabsichtigter Zufall“.

BIOS (akronim ang. Basic Input/Output System - podstawowy system wejścia-wyjścia) to zapisany w pamięci stałej, inny dla każdego typu płyty głównej komputera, zestaw podstawowych procedur pośredniczących pomiędzy systemem operacyjnym a sprzętem. Program konfiguracyjny BIOS-a to BIOS setup. Program zapisany w pamięci ROM (Read Only Memory - pamięć tylko do odczytu) płyty głównej oraz innych urządzeń takich jak karta graficzna. W wypadku płyty głównej BIOS testuje sprzęt po włączeniu komputera, przeprowadza tzw. POST (akronim ang. "Power On Self Test"), zajmuje się wstępną obsługą urządzeń wejścia/wyjścia, kontroluje transfer danych pomiędzy komponentami takimi jak dysk twardy, procesor czy napęd CD-ROM. Inicjuje program rozruchowy. BIOS potrzebny jest w komputerach osobistych ze względu na architekturę płyt głównych, gdzie dzięki ACPI kontroluje zasilanie, a poza tym monitoruje temperaturę itp.
