Baltimore

Baltimore is an independent city located in the state of Maryland in the United States. As of 2006, the population of Baltimore City was 640,961. The city is a major U.S. seaport, situated closer to major Midwestern markets than any other major seaport on the East Coast. Once an industrial town with an economic base in manufacturing, Baltimore's economy has now shifted primarily to a service sector-oriented, with its largest employer no longer Bethlehem Steel but The Johns Hopkins University and The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Sie hatte im Jahre 2006 640.966 Einwohner (2005: 640.064) und ist einer der bedeutendsten Seehäfen in den Vereinigten Staaten.In Baltimore befindet sich das Wohnhaus und Grab des Schriftstellers Edgar Allan Poe und das des Journalisten H. L. Mencken. Baltimore ist sowohl der Geburtsort des berühmten Baseballspielers Babe Ruth als auch der Inspirationsort für die amerikanische Nationalhymne. In der Stadt gibt es viele historische Gebäude und landesweit bekannte Denkmäler. Baltimore umfasst neben zwei großen Universitäten zahlreiche weitere Ausbildungseinrichtungen und Museen.

Baltimore – miasto na wschodnim wybrzeżu USA, największe w stanie Maryland. Leży około 60 km od Waszyngtonu i tworzy z nim jeden obszar metropolitalny. Jest miastem niezależnym, a więc nie wchodzi w skład żadnego hrabstwa. Zgodnie z prawem stanu Maryland posiada status identyczny jak hrabstwo dla celów statystycznych – Państwowy Urząd Statystyczny (ang.: US Census Bureau) uznaje hrabstwo za podstawę obliczeń i dlatego traktuje Baltimore na zasadzie równości z hrabstwem. Baltimore jest tradycyjnie ostoją Partii Demokratycznej od ponad 150 lat. Do Partii Demokratycznej należy para senatorów stanu Maryland – Barbara Mikulski i Paul Sarbanes – oboje pochodzą i mieszkają w Baltimore. Stąd pochodzi też słynny zespół baseballowy Baltimore Orioles

Baltimora (ingl. Baltimore) è una città degli Stati Uniti d'America, nello stato del Maryland. Amministrativamente si tratta di una città indipendente, non afferente, cioè, ad alcuna contea, ma soggetta all'autorità amministrativa dello Stato. È la più grande città del Maryland e prende il nome da Cæcilius Calvert, II barone Baltimore, fondatore e primo governatore della Colonia del Maryland.
