Ballot Box

A ballot box is a temporarily sealed container, usually cuboid though sometimes a  tamper resistant bag, with a narrow slot in the top sufficient to accept a ballot paper in an election but which prevents anyone from accessing the votes cast until the close of the voting period. It will usually be located in a polling station although in some countries, notably Ireland and Russia, there may also be ballot boxes that are taken to people's homes where they would otherwise be unable to travel to the polling station. When very large ballot papers are used, there may be a feeder mechanism to assist in the deposit of the paper into the box.

Die Wahlurne ist ein geschlossener Behälter mit Schlitz zur Durchführung einer geheimen Wahl oder Abstimmung mit Wahl- oder Stimmzetteln. Die Wähler kreuzen dabei in einer Wahlkabine unbeobachtet und unbeeinflusst einen oder mehrere Stimmzettel bzw. Wahlzettel an und stecken sie danach gefaltet oder in einem Umschlag in die Wahlurne. Die verschlossene und in der Regel versiegelte Wahlurne wird nach Beendigung der Wahl oder Abstimmung ausgeleert, damit die Wahl- oder Stimmzettel gezählt werden können. Wird die Wahlurne vor der Auszählung noch transportiert, so wird sie wenn noch nicht vorher geschehen, um Manipulationen zu verhindern, versiegelt.
