Ballast
Ballast may refer to:

Objects
  • Ballast tank, a device used on ships and submarines and other submersibles to control buoyancy and stability
  • Ballast weights, metallic plates used to bring auto racing vehicles up to the minimum mandated weight
  • Electrical ballast, used to stabilize the current flow in lamps
  • Sailing ballast, ship's ballast, used to weigh a ship down
  • Track ballast, the layer of crushed rock or gravel upon which railway track is laid
  • Ballast carried aboard an aircraft, for example:
    • in gliding to increase speed and/or adjust the aircraft's center of gravity
    • in a balloon as a buoyancy compensator
  • Ballast tractor, a heavy haulage road vehicle designed to pull or push heavy or exceptionally large loads

Ballast
Als Ballast wird in der Seefahrt eine schwere, aber so gut wie wertlose Ladung bezeichnet, die zur Stabilität des Schiffes beitragen soll, wenn das eigentliche Frachtgut zu leicht ist. Ein Handelsschiff, das ohne Frachtgut unterwegs ist, fährt daher im maritimen Sprachgebrauch unter Ballast.

Ballast
Ballast kan vara:
  • En fartygsterm, även benämnd barlast.
  • Det makadam (stenmaterial) och grus som ingår i betong (innefattar alla kornstorlekar).
  • Det sten- grus- eller annat material som ingår som fyllnad i järnvägsbankar.
  • En elektronisk komponent, i ljussammanhang kallad driftdon, som används i urladdningslampor, bl a i natriumlampor.

Ballast
Con ballast si intende il pietrisco, allo stato naturale o ricavato per frantumazione di rocce, utilizzato per la formazione di massicciate ferroviarie.

Il materiale in natura deve possedere buona resistenza alla compressione, alla frammentazione (coefficiente Los Angeles) ed al gelo; deve inoltre essere esente da fibre di amianto.

Il pietrisco deve presentare, dopo la lavorazione in appositi impianti di frantumazione, vagliatura e lavaggio, una granulometria tipicamente compresa fra 30 e 60 mm, un contenuto ridotto di particelle fini (polveri) ed una forma il più possibile tondeggiante.
