Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD, sometimes called Berkeley Unix) is a Unix operating system derivative developed and distributed by the Computer Systems Research Group (CSRG) of the University of California, Berkeley, from 1977 to 1995. Today the term "BSD" is often used non-specifically to refer to any of the BSD descendants which together form a branch of the family of Unix-like operating systems. Operating systems derived from the original BSD code remain actively developed and widely used.

Die Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) ist eine Version des Betriebssystems Unix, die an der Universität von Kalifornien in Berkeley ab 1977 entstanden ist. BSD basiert auf AT&Ts Unix Sixth Edition (V6) und Seventh Edition (V7), die ab 1975 (V6) bzw. 1979 (V7) den Universitäten zum Preis der Datenträger zur Verfügung gestellt wurden, da das Unternehmen zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch das Telekommunikationsmonopol in den USA innehatte und daher keine Geschäfte im Computerbereich tätigen durfte, verbunden mit der Erlaubnis, den Quelltext einzusehen und zu modifizieren. Diese Erlaubnis blieb auch später noch zu Zwecken der Lehre erhalten. Inzwischen ist der komplette Quelltext umgeschrieben, es gibt keine einzige Zeile AT&T-Quelltext in aktuellen BSDs.

Także potoczna nazwa licencji BSD, na której te systemy są wydawane, oraz pokrewnych licencji tego typu (np. licencja MIT).
