BBY

Fans of the Star Wars fictional universe keep track of the dates of key events with a dating system (or calendar) reckoned at the Battle of Yavin featured in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. In this dating system, BBY stands for Before the Battle of Yavin, and ABY stands for After the Battle of Yavin, so 50 BBY comes before 5 ABY, as with BC and AD. Occasionally, the defeat of the Empire at the Battle of Endor (four years after Yavin) has been used as an alternate starting year, but has generally been phased out in favor of the current standard system. When Bantam Spectra held the license for Star Wars novels, they described their books as after Endor, but Del Rey, the current license-holder, exclusively uses ABY.

Główną przyczyną takiego stanu rzeczy był fakt, że George Lucas nie zezwolił twórcom Expanded Universe na opisywanie wydarzeń sprzed Nowej Nadziei. Doprowadziło to do powstania kilku 'umownych' systemów liczenia dat - najczęściej za 'rok zerowy' przyjmowano 35 lub 32 BNH, podejrzewając, że to wtedy Palpatine przejął władzę i stworzył Imperium.

BBY è acronimo di "Before the Battle of Yavin", "prima della battaglia di Yavin" in inglese, ed è un marcatore temporale per le date utilizzato nell'universo immaginario di Guerre Stellari.All'interno della narrazione questo sistema di datazione è usato quasi esclusivamente dalla Nuova Repubblica (Alleanza Ribelle). L'Impero Galattico usava un sistema di datazione che partiva dalla Grande Risincronizzazione (35 BBY), o da quando l'imperatore Palpatine, precedentemente Cancelliere, salì al potere cancellando la Repubblica (19 BBY). La  Vecchia Repubblica datava invece gli eventi a partire dalla Riforma Ruusan (1000 BBY).

Todos los sucesos del universo de La Guerra de las Galaxias se cuentan en años tomando como referencia la batalla de Yavin, ocurrida en el Episodio IV de la saga.Anteriormente a dicha batalla los años se habían contado desde la Refoma de Ruusan (la batalla de Ruusan tuvo lugar mil años antes de la de Yavin, por lo que es fácil pasar fechas de un sistema de datación a otro), desde la Gran Resincronización, etc.
