Eine Mailbox, im englischen Sprachbereich auch als Bulletin Board System (BBS) bekannt, ist ein meist privat betriebenes Rechnersystem, das per DFÜ zur Kommunikation und zum Datenaustausch genutzt werden kann. Der verantwortliche Betreiber hat den Status des System Operators (Sysop), sein Aufgabenbereich gleicht dem eines Administrators. Jeder Benutzer (User) der Mailbox hat ein eigenes Postfach, in dem elektronische Nachrichten für ihn gespeichert und von ihm abgerufen werden können. Zudem gibt es meist öffentliche Bereiche, oft Foren, Bretter oder Echos genannt (siehe GABELN), in denen die Benutzer sich austauschen und diskutieren können. Häufig bieten Mailboxen darüber hinaus einen Download-Bereich für Dateien an oder bieten Zusatzleistungen wie z. B. Onlinespiele an. Die Grafik entspricht meist der des vom Fernsehen her bekannten  Videotext. Beispiele dafür sind auf der rückblickenden Homepage der maXou BBS (siehe Weblinks unten) zu sehen.

Una BBS (o Bulletin Board System) è un computer che utilizza un software per permettere a utenti esterni di connettersi ad esso attraverso la linea telefonica, dando la possibilità di utilizzare funzioni di messaggistica e file sharing centralizzato. Il sistema è stato sviluppato negli anni '70 e ha costituito il fulcro delle prime comunicazioni telematiche amatoriali, dando vita alla telematica di base. Dal lato della BBS è anche stato utilizzato negli anni '90, in alternativa ai modem, il protocollo a commutazione di pacchetto X.25 e relativo dispositivo di connessione in grado di multiplexare più connessioni logiche su un unica connessione fisica.
