Ayah

This article is about the Qur'an. For the Hindi word for "nurse," see Amah. Ayah ( , plural Ayat ) is the Arabic word for sign or miracle. The word usually refers to each one of the 6236 verses[1] found in the Qur'an (6348 ayat counting the basmalas). Muslims regard each ayah of the Qur'an as a sign from God.

Aya, pl. Ayat ( pl. „Zeichen“, „Vers“), nennt man im Koran im allgemeinen einen Vers in einer Sure. Grundbedeutung des Wortes ist „Zeichen“, „Wunder“ oder „Beweis“. Dabei handelt es sich um Zeichen in der Natur, in denen sich Gottes Macht manifestiert, um Ereignisse, deren Urheber ein Prophet ist, und um Zeichen - vergangene und zukünftige -, die ein Prophet als Offenbarung Gottes mitteilt.

Aya (enk.) (Arabisch: آية, āyah) of ayat (mv.) (Arabisch: آيات, āyātun) is een vers uit de Koran. Het woord aya betekent zoveel als teken of godsbewijs. De verzen van de Koran worden dus tekenen genoemd. De kortste soera bestaat uit 3 ayat, o.a. de allerkortste soera, De Overvloedigheid; de langste (soera De Koe) uit 286 ayat. De gehele Koran bestaat uit circa 6235 ayat. De telling van het totale aantal ayat kan per stroming verschillen. Soms is dat afhankelijk van het meetellen van het basmala of niet. De Ahmadiyya bijvoorbeeld tellen het basmala mee (als eerste aya) wat een groter aantal ayat oplevert. In de 19e eeuw heeft de geleerde Flügel een indeling van ayat gemaakt die in sommige westerse vertalingen nog gebruikt wordt, hoewel de meeste uitgaven heden ten dage de Egyptische indeling uit 1924 gebruiken. De telling kan tot zeven ayat afwijken.
