For other uses, see Avatar (disambiguation).The AVATAR protocol (Advanced Video Attribute Terminal Assembler and Recreator) is a system of escape sequences occasionally used on Bulletin Board Systems (BBSes). It has largely the same functionality as the more popular ANSI escape codes, but has the advantage that the escape sequences are much shorter. AVATAR can thus render colored text and artwork much faster over slow connections.

In Hindu philosophy, an avatar (also spelled as avatara) (, ), most commonly refers to the incarnation (bodily manifestation) of a higher being (deva), or the Supreme Being (God) onto planet Earth. The Sanskrit word literally means "descent" (avatarati) and usually implies a deliberate descent into lower realms of existence for special purposes. The term is used primarily in Hinduism, for incarnations of Vishnu whom many Hindus worship as God. Shiva and Ganesha are also described as descending in the form of avatars, with the Ganesha Purana and the Mudgala Purana detailing Ganesha's avatars specifically.

Avatara (Sanskrit, m., अवतार, , wörtl.: "Abstieg", von "hinab" und "überqueren") bezeichnet im Hinduismus Gott oder einen göttlichen Aspekt, der die Gestalt eines Menschen oder Tieres annimmt. In den Schriften erscheint der Begriff des Avatara im Ramayana, in der Bhagavad Gita , im Srimad Bhagavatam und in vielen anderen, z. T. daraus abgeleiteten, Texten. Die Aufgabe des Avatar oder Avatara ist, der Menschheit in ihrem Streben zum Göttlichen hin Wegbereiter, Vorbild und Lehrer zu sein. Krishna sagt dies in der Bhagavad Gita im vierten Gesang ab Vers 7 deutlich: Denn immer, wenn die Frömmigkeit hinschwinden will, o Bharata,Ruchlosigkeit ihr Haupt erhebt, dann schaffe ich mich selber neu.Zum Schutz der guten Menschen hier und zu der Bösen Untergang.Die Frömmigkeit zu fest'gen neu, entsteh' in jedem Alter(*) ich.

Awatara (coraz częściej, pod wpływem j. angielskiego, także Awatar) (sansk. avatāra (अवतार) – zstąpienie, zejście, inkarnacja) – w hinduizmie wcielenie (inkarnacja) bóstwa, które zstępuje z nieba na ziemię w postaci śmiertelnej – ludzkiej, zwierzęcej lub hybrydalnej, w celu przywrócenia ładu na ziemi (dharma). Początki tej koncepcji sięgają już Wed, jednakże klasyczna koncepcja wiąże się przede wszystkim z Wisznu i formuje się dopiero w Puranach.

Presso la religione Induista, un Avatar è l'assunzione di un corpo fisico da parte di Dio, o di uno dei Suoi aspetti. Questa parola deriva dalla lingua sanscrita, e significa "disceso"; nella tradizione religiosa induista consiste nella deliberata incarnazione di un Deva, o del Signore stesso, in un corpo fisico al fine di svolgere determinati compiti. Questo termine viene usato principalmente per definire le diverse incarnazioni di Visnu, tra cui si possono annoverare Kṛṣṇa e Rama.
