Avanos
Avanos is a town and a district of
Nevşehir Province of
Turkey, located 18 km north of
Nevşehir, the capital city of the province. It is situated within the historic and touristic region of
Cappadocia. The old city of Avanos, whose name in ancient times was Venessa overlooks the longest river of Turkey, the
Kızılırmak (Red River), which also separates Avanos from the rest of Cappadocia. The most famous historical feature of Avanos, which is still relevant and very visible today, is its production of earthenware pottery. The ceramic trade in this district and its countless pottery factories date right back to the
Hittites, and the ceramic clay from the red silt of the Kızılırmak has always been used. It is a popular destination because of its attractive old town with cobbled streets, and superb views over the river.

Avanos

Türkei mit ca. 12.000 Einwohnern. Sie liegt am
Kizilirmak, dem längsten Fluss der Türkei, in der Provinz
Nevsehir und der Region
Kappadokien. Die Vergangenheit der etwa 920 Meter hoch gelegenen Stadt geht wahrscheinlich bis in
hethitische Zeit zurück.Das Töpferdorf Avanos ist bekannt durch seine zahlreichen, traditionsreichen
Töpfereien und
Ziegeleien. Die Einwohner leben primär vom
Tourismus. Die Stadt besitzt große Hotels, Verkaufsläden der lokalen
Töpfer, Pensionen, Teppichhändler, Bars und Restaurants sowie Animationsbetriebe für den 3-Tages-Tourismus.

Avanos, conocida en la antigüedad como Venessa, fue un importante asentamiento en diferentes épocas.El nombre de la ciudad se supone que deriva del nombre Vanessa utilizado en la época romana. Tras las excavaciones arqueológicas realizadas en un
túmulo cerca de Avanos se han encontrado restos pertenecientes al periodo antiguo Hitita, por otro lado, una
necrópolis y las ruinas de un templo dedicado al culto del dios
Zeus de la época helenística demuestran la importancia de la ciudad en distintas épocas.
