Avalon (probably from the Welsh word afal, meaning apple) is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend. It first appears in Geoffrey of Monmouth's 1136 pseudohistorical account Historia Regum Britanniae ("The History of the Kings of Britain") as the place where King Arthur's sword Excalibur (Caliburnus) was forged and later where Arthur was taken to recover from his wounds after the Battle of Camlann. Avalon was associated from an early date with mystical practices and people such as Morgan le Fay.

Avalon (veraltet: Avilion; verwandt mit der indogermanischen Wortwurzel aballo für Apfel), auch Avalun genannt, ist ein mystischer Ort, der aus der Artussage bekannt ist. Auch bekannt als Ynis Avalach, was so viel bedeutet wie Apfelinsel (auf Walisisch = Ynys yr Afallon = Insel der Äpfel). Der Artussage oder Gralsgeschichte nach war Avalon der Aufenthaltsort des Königs Artus nach seiner Verwundung.

Avalon (en gaulois « la pommeraie ») est, dans la Légende arthurienne, une île mythologique. La fée Morgane en est la reine. Île sacrée dans la tradition celtique, les prêtresses de Ceridwen y ont élu domicile. On ne peut s'y rendre qu'après avoir reçu une forme d'initiation : il faut savoir appeler la barque qui y mène, mais également savoir s'y rendre à pied, à travers un labyrinthe marécageux. Le commun des mortels peut y voir « l'île aux Moines », abritant un monastère et servant de lieu de retraite, mais le déchiffrement du mythe est plus complexe. « Avalon » représente le dernier refuge de la tradition celtique, à ce titre l'île correspond davantage à l'Irlande, mais aussi à tout finis terrae où les légendes se conservent.

Trwa tam nieustanna wiosna, panuje nienaruszalny pokój, choroby nie mają dostępu do jej brzegów, a ziemia jest tak urodzajna, że szczęśliwcy, którzy dotarli do Avalonu, nie muszą troszczyć się o jej uprawianie, gdyż sama dostarcza wszystkich potrzebnych warzyw i owoców. Ci, którzy zasłużyli na pośmiertny żywot wieczny, przebywają tam, zażywając rozkoszy stołu i łoża.
