Auxiliaries (Roman military)

Auxiliaries (from Latin: auxilia = supports) formed the standing non-citizen corps of the Roman army of the Principate (30 BC - 284 AD), alongside the citizen legions. By the 2nd century, the auxilia contained the same number of infantry as the legions and in addition provided almost all the Roman army's cavalry and more specialised troops (especially light cavalry and archers). The auxilia thus represented nearly two-thirds of Rome's military forces at that time.

À l'époque romaine, les troupes auxiliaires ou Alares (auxilia en latin) sont formées de soldats de l'armée romaine ne jouissant pas de la citoyenneté romaine car originaires des peuples alliés ou soumis à Rome. Par exemple :Jugurtha et les cavaliers numides participent en Espagne à la guerre contre Numanceles Eduens, qui avaient la qualité d'ami du peuple romain fournirent des contingents à Jules César lors de la Guerre des Gaules

De Auxilia (hulptroepen) waren de gerekruteerde soldaten die buiten de legioen-structuur van het Romeinse leger stonden. Zij waren dan ook meestal niet-Romeinse volkeren en stonden onder bevel van hun eigen aanvoerders. De Bataven stonden bekend als leveranciers van uitstekende Auxiliares, die voornamelijk uit ruiterij bestonden.
