Australia , officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the mainland of the Australian continent as well as the island of Tasmania and numerous smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It is the world's sixth-largest country by total area. Neighbouring countries include Indonesia, East Timor and Papua New Guinea to the north; the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia to the north-east; and New Zealand to the south-east.

Australien (engl. und lat. Australia, abgeleitet von lat. terra australis: „südliches Land“; offizieller Name Commonwealth of Australia) ist der flächenmäßig sechstgrößte Staat der Erde. Er liegt auf der Südhalbkugel nordwestlich von Neuseeland und südlich von Indonesien, Osttimor, West-Neuguinea und Papua-Neuguinea und umfasst die Hauptlandmasse des Kontinents Australien sowie die vorgelagerte Insel Tasmanien und einige kleinere Inseln. Darüber hinaus gehören noch die pazifische Norfolkinsel, die Kokosinseln, die Weihnachtsinsel und die Ashmore- und Cartierinseln im Indischen Ozean sowie die subantarktischen Inseln Macquarieinsel und Heard und McDonaldinseln als Außengebiete zu Australien. Auch das Australische Antarktis-Territorium wird vom australischen Staat als Außengebiet betrachtet. Der Anspruch auf dieses Gebiet wird seit dem Jahr 1933 erhoben.
