Australian federal election, 1901
Federal elections for the inaugural Parliament of Australia were held in Australia on March 29 and March 301901 following Federation and the establishment of the Commonwealth of Australia. The election resulted in a win for Edmund Barton's Protectionist Party with 31 of 75 seats in a minority government with Labour's 14 seats against George Reid's Free Trade Party on 28 seats. The event would be important for setting the template for future federal elections and the fact that those elected determined much of the character of Australian parliamentary democracy and protocol from then to the present day.
