Height: 17-20 inches.
Weight: 33-55 lbs.
Life Span: 10-13 yrs.
Breed Group: Herding Dogs
Overview
The Australian cattle dog is a strong, healthy breed that herds cattle by nipping at their heels but without the nonstop barking common to many other herders. Wary by nature, the Australian cattle dog needs early obedience training and social contact with both people and other animals. Without such training it will try to dominate the family "pack." Small children playing and squealing will trigger its herding instinct unless this dog is exposed to such behavior at an early age.
Appearance
The Australian cattle dog has a moderately short and straight outercoat and a short, dense undercoat. Coat color is blue, blue mottled, or red speckled.
Grooming & Exercise Needs
The Australian cattle dog, which sheds heavily in the spring, requires daily brushing during shedding season. This dog needs a lot of exercise, such as daily vigorous romps and/or fast-paced walks.
Origins
The Australian cattle dog was bred in the late 19th century to herd cattle in rough terrain and extreme heat. It counts collies, dingoes, and dalmatians among its ancestors.
Special Alerts
This breed is not suitable for inexperienced dog owners and is not recommended for city or apartment living.
