Australian Antarctic Territory

The Australian Antarctic Territory (AAT) is the part of Antarctica claimed by Australia and is the largest territory of Antarctica claimed by any nation. It consists of all the islands and territory south of 60° S and between 44°38' E and 160° E, except for Adélie Land (136°11' E to 142°02' E), which divides the territory into Western AAT (the larger portion) and Eastern AAT. It is bounded by Queen Maud Land in the West and by Ross Dependency in the East. The area is estimated at 6,119,818 km². The territory is inhabited only by the staff of research stations. The Australian Antarctic Division administers the area primarily by maintaining three year-round stations (Mawson Station, Davis Station and Casey Station), which support various research projects.

Das Australische Antarktis-Territorium (engl. Australian Antarctic Territory) ist ein Gebiet von 160° O bis 142° O und 136° O bis 45° O in der Antarktis, auf das der Staat Australien seit dem 13. Juni 1933 Anspruch (Australian Antarctic Territory Acceptance Act 1933) erhebt. Das schmale Stück zwischen 142° O bis 136° O wird von Frankreich beansprucht und teilt das Territorium. Mit Inkrafttreten des Antarktisvertrages am 23. Juni 1961 wurde der international nie anerkannte Anspruch vorerst aufgeschoben.

Należą do niego wyspy oraz ląd Antarktydy położony na południe od 60 równoleżnika oraz 160°E i 142°02'W oraz 136°11'W i 44°38'E. Na terytorium brak jest stałych mieszkańców, personel baz polarnych wynosi około 450 osób.

Il Territorio antartico australiano (AAT) è la parte dell'Antartide sotto il controllo dell'Australia ed è il più vasto territorio antartico posseduto da una nazione. È formato da tutte le isole e i territori a sud del 60° parallelo Sud e tra il 44°38' meridiano Est e il 160°, ad eccezione della Terre Adélie (dal meridiano 136°11' Est fino al 142°02' Est), che divide la zona tra Territorio australiano atlantico dell'ovest (Western AAT) (la parte più vasta) e dell'est (Eastern AAT). Confina con la Terra della regina Maud ad ovest e con la Dipendenza di Ross ad Est. L'area è stimata intorno ai 6'119'818 km². Il territorio è abitato soltanto dal personale delle stazioni di ricerca. La stazione principale è Mawson Station. Il Governo australiano per la divisione antartica gestisce l'area principalmente finanziando diversi progetti di ricerca.
