Attica, Greece

Attica (Greek: Αττική, ) is a periphery (subdivision) in Greece, containing Athens, the capital of Greece. Attica is subdivided into the prefectures of Athens, Piraeus, East Attica and West Attica.Attica is located in what is today Southern Greece, and covers about 3,808 square kilometers. In addition to Athens, it contains within its area the cities of Peiraeus, Eleusis, Megara, Laurium, and Marathon, as well as a small part of the Peloponnese peninsula and the islands of Salamis, Aegina, Poros, Hydra, Spetses, Kythira, and Antikythera. About 3,750,000 people live in the periphery, of which more than 95 re inhabitants of the Athens metropolitan area.

Attika (griechisch Αττική Attiki) ist die Bezeichnung für eine Region des klassischen und eine Verwaltungsregion (peripheria) des heutigen Griechenlands, die gleichzeitig eine griechische Präfektur (nomos) bildet.In der Antike war Attika das zur Polis Athen gehörige Land, mit einem Heiligtum der Athene auf der Akropolis und einem Poseidontempel am Kap Sunion im Südosten der Landschaft. Noch heute stellt Athen den Hauptort und das Verwaltungszentrum der Region dar.Die Attika grenzt im Westen an Böotien und Megara. Wichtige Orte sind der Hafen von Piräus bei Athen und der Ort Marathon im Nordosten. An der Ostküste lag die Stadt Thorikos, bei der nach der griechischen Mythologie die Göttin Demeter an Land gegangen ist.
