Le numéro atomique (Z) est le terme employé en chimie et en physique pour représenter le nombre de protons du noyau d'un atome. Un atome peut être schématisé en première approche par une agglomération compacte (noyau atomique) de protons (p+) et de neutrons (n), autour de laquelle circulent des électrons (e-). Dans un atome de charge électrique neutre, le nombre d'électron est lui aussi égal au numéro atomique (Z protons de charge +e, plus Z électrons de charge -e ⇒ charge totale = 0 Coulomb).

Die Ordnungszahl, auch Atomnummer, Kernladungszahl oder Protonenzahl genannt, gibt die Anzahl der Protonen in einem Atomkern an. Ihr Formelzeichen ist Z. Da in jedem ungeladenen Atom die Zahl der Protonen im Kern mit der Zahl der Elektronen in der Atomhülle übereinstimmt, gibt die Ordnungszahl indirekt auch die Elektronenzahl in einem Atom an.

Liczba atomowa ( Z ) (liczba porządkowa) określa ile protonów znajduje się w jądrze danego atomu. Jest także równa liczbie elektronów wolnego atomu.Atomy, które posiadają taką samą liczbę protonów, są z definicji atomami jednego pierwiastka. Nie oznacza to jednak, że wszystkie atomy jednego pierwiastka posiadają taką samą masę, gdyż mogą one posiadać różną liczbę neutronów w jądrach. Atomy posiadające tę samą liczbę atomową, ale różną liczbę neutronów nazywa się izotopami.

Il numero atomico (indicato solitamente con Z , dal tedesco Zahl, e detto anche numero protonico) corrisponde al numero di protoni contenuti in un nucleo atomico. In un atomo neutro il numero atomico è pari anche al numero di elettroni; in caso contrario l'atomo è detto ione. Si usa scrivere questo numero come pedice sinistro del simbolo dell'elemento chimico in questione: per esempio 6C, poiché il carbonio ha sei protoni. Ad ogni numero atomico corrisponde un diverso elemento chimico.
