Atomic units
Atomic units (au or a.u.) form a system of natural units which is especially convenient for atomic physics calculations. There are two different kinds of atomic units, which one might name Hartree atomic units and Rydberg atomic units, which differ in the choice of the unit of mass and charge. This article deals with Hartree atomic units. In atomic units, the numerical values of the following four fundamental physical constants are all unity by definition:

Atomare Einheiten
Die atomaren Einheiten (englisch: atomic units, au) sind ein Einheitensystem, das hauptsächlich in der Atom- und Molekülphysik und der Theoretischen Chemie benutzt wird. Die atomaren Einheiten gehen von den Eigenschaften des Elektrons im Wasserstoffatom aus.

Système d'unités atomiques
Le Système international d'unités (le S.I.) est un moyen de communication universel, mais en contre-partie, il est inapproprié à tel ou tel domaine scientifique. En particulier, il est logiquement anthropomorphique, c'est-à-dire à échelle humaine. Or l'essor de la physique et de la chimie s'est établie sur la notion d'atome. Et comme Maxwell l'avait prophétisé, se construirait bientôt un système plutôt atomique.

Jednostki atomowe to system jednostek w którym wiele wielkości fizycznych związanych ze strukturą atomową materii wyraża się jako ich proste wielokrotności.
Wielkości – stałe fizyczne lub ich kombinacje – stanowiące podstawę systemu jednostek atomowych:
– masa spoczynkowa elektronu ≈ 9,1093897·10-31 kg,
– ładunek elementarny (ładunek elektronu) ≈ 1,60217733·10-19 C
– jednostka momentu pędu ≈ 1,05457266·10-34 J·s
– przenikalność dielektryczna próżni razy 4π

Unità atomiche
Le Unità atomiche (au) sono un sistema di unità di misura usato nella fisica atomica per descrivere le proprietà degli elettroni. Tutte le unità di questo sistema vengono scelte ponendo uguale ad uno i valori di alcune costanti che descrivono proprietà fondamentali degli elettroni.
La costante della forza elettrostatica 
è anch'essa uguale a uno in questo sistema. Dato che queste sei quantità non sono indipendenti è sufficiente definire quattro di queste unità per avere automaticamente anche le altre.
Nelle unità atomiche, il magnetone di Bohr vale 
, e la velocità della luce nel vuoto vale
