In chemistry and physics, an atom (Greek ἄτομος or átomos meaning "indivisible") is the smallest particle still characterizing a chemical element.An atom consists of a dense nucleus of positively-charged protons and electrically-neutral neutrons, surrounded by a much larger electron cloud consisting of negatively-charged electrons. An atom is electrically neutral if it has the same number of protons as electrons. The number of protons in an atom defines the chemical element to which it belongs, while the number of neutrons determines the isotope of the element.

The name Atom applies to a pair of related standards. The Atom Syndication Format is an XML language used for web feeds, while the Atom Publishing Protocol (APP is the acronym, but it is referred to as 'AtomPub' for short) is a simple HTTP-based protocol for creating and updating Web resources. Web feeds allow software programs to check for updates published on a web site. To provide a web feed, a site owner may use specialized software (such as a content management system) that publishes a list (or "feed") of recent articles or content in a standardized, machine-readable format. The feed can then be downloaded by web sites that syndicate content from the feed, or by feed reader programs that allow Internet users to subscribe to feeds and view their content.

Im Laufe der Wissenschaftsgeschichte wurden unterschiedliche Atommodelle vorgeschlagen. Atome bestehen aus einem elektrisch positiv geladenen Atomkern und einer Atomhülle aus negativ geladenen Elektronen. Atome sind im Normalzustand elektrisch neutral; die Anzahl von Protonen und Elektronen ist dann jeweils gleich. Sofern Atome eine elektrische Ladung tragen, werden sie als Ionen bezeichnet. Die Umwandlung eines neutralen Atoms in ein Ion (durch Entfernen oder Hinzufügen von Elektronen) heißt Ionisierung.

Atom wird in der Computertechnik als Überbegriff für zwei Standards genutzt. Während das Atom Syndication Format als ein XML-Format den plattformunabhängigen Austausch von Informationen ermöglicht (siehe Feed), wurde das Atom Publishing Protocol (APP, wobei sich AtomPub eingebürgert hat) ersonnen um das Erstellen und Bearbeiten von Webressourcen auf der Basis von einfachem HTML und XML zu ermöglichen. Atom bietet somit die Möglichkeit, Webinhalte zu bearbeiten und zu verbreiten.

Atom (z gr.  atomos: "niepodzielny") – najmniejszy, niepodzielny metodami chemicznymi składnik materii. Atomy składają się z jądra i otaczających to jądro elektronów. W jądrze znajdują się z kolei nukleony: protony i neutrony. Neutrony są cząsteczkami obojętnymi elektrycznie, protony noszą ładunek elektryczny dodatni, zaś elektrony ujemny. W każdym obojętnym atomie liczba protonów i elektronów jest jednakowa, ponieważ wartość ładunku elektrycznego protonów i elektronów jest jednakowa. Atomy z liczbą elektronów różną od liczby protonów nazywane są jonami. O właściwościach atomów decyduje głównie liczba protonów w jądrze atomowym, atomy o takiej samej liczbie protonów w jądrze i różnej ilości neutronów są izotopami tego samego pierwiastka chemicznego. Atomy są podstawowymi elementami budującymi materię z punktu widzenia chemii i pozostają najmniejszymi cząstkami rozróżnianymi metodami chemicznymi. Nie zmieniają się w reakcjach chemicznych.

Alpha Teens On Machines (2005-2007) – francuski serial animowany nadawany na kanale Jetix.Serial opowiada o piątce przyjaciół tworzących drużynę Alpha, którzy mieszkają w fikcyjnym mieście Landmark City. Został utworzony dla rozwiązania problemów związanych z istnieniem równoległych standardów RSS (Really Simple Syndication/Rich Site Summary i RDF Site Summary) oraz błędów tych specyfikacji. Atom unika niejasności specyfikacji RSS, poprawia zgodność z XML i innymi standardami, dodaje elementy, których brakowało w RSS oraz w pokrewnej specyfikacji określa protokół publikacji kanałów.
