Ein Atoll ist ein ringförmiges Korallenriff, das eine Lagune umschließt. Das Wort Atoll leitet sich von atolhu ab, dem entsprechenden Begriff in der maledivischen Sprache (Dhivehi). Das Korallenriff bildet einen Saum von häufig äußerst schmalen Inseln aus, die nach dem polynesischen Wort für „Insel“ meist als motu bezeichnet werden. In der Lagune können sich noch Reste des ehemaligen Vulkangipfels als Inseln über den Meeresspiegel erheben.

Atol jest typem płaskiej wyspy koralowej położonej na oceanie, składającej się z rafy koralowej w kształcie pierścienia otaczającego centralną depresję. Depresja ta nazywana laguną może być częścią wyłonionej wyspy, stanowić niewielki, lecz odrębny zbiornik wodny lub też być połączona z morzem. Nazwę atol spopularyzował Karol Darwin.

Un atollo è un'isola composta da una particolare formazione di terra emersa e lagune, presente negli oceani Pacifico e Indiano e compresa tra le latitudini tropicali. Il suo nome deriva da un'espressione dialettale delle popolazioni autoctone delle Isole Maldive, "Atolu".
