An atlas is a collection of maps or manifolds, traditionally bound into book form, but also found in multimedia formats. As well as geographic features and political boundaries, many often feature geopolitical, social, religious and economic statistics.

When completed, ATLAS will be 46 metres long and 25 metres in  diameter, and will weigh about 7,000 tonnes. The project involves roughly 2,000 scientists and engineers at 165 institutions in 35 countries. The construction was scheduled to be completed in June 2007, however is now stated to be mid-2008. The experiment is designed to observe phenomena that involve highly massive particles which were not observable using earlier lower-energy accelerators and might shed light on new theories of particle physics beyond the Standard Model.

ATLAS (acronyme de A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS : - dispositif instrumental toroïdal pour le LHC - qui utilise un électroaimant toroïdal où le champ magnétique se referme sur lui-même dans l'air, sans l'aide d'un retour de fer) est l'une des 5 expériences du futur collisionneur LHC au CERN. Il s'agit d'un détecteur de particules semblable à CMS, mais de plus grande taille et de conception différente. Il aura pour tâche de détecter le boson de Higgs, des particules supersymétriques (SUSY). Ces dernières sont prédites par la théorie mais n'ont pas été détectées expérimentalement à ce jour.

Der Atlas (Mehrzahl: Atlanten oder – in der Kartografie weniger gebräuchlich – Atlasse) ist in der Kartografie eine Sammlung thematisch, inhaltlich oder regional zusammenhängender Landkarten in Buchform oder loser Folge. Abweichend von der Definition, dass ein Atlas normalerweise Kartenmaterial enthält, verwenden manche Verlage das Wort auch, um ein mit viel Bildmaterial versehenes Nachschlagewerk zu einem bestimmten Wissenbereich zu bezeichnen (zum Beispiel dtv-Atlas zur Ökologie, deutscher Taschenbuchverlag, 1990)

ATLAS (ang. A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS) - to jeden z sześciu detektorów w nowobudowanym akceleratorze cząstek LHC w ośrodku CERN. Projekt detektora jak i całego eksperymentu został przedstawiony w 1994 roku zaś budowę rozpoczęto w roku 1995. ATLAS jest z założenia detektorem ogólnego zastosowania, podczas zderzania wiązek protonów jest bardziej skupiony na wyłapaniu największego spektrum produktów kolizji niż detekcji konkretnych rodzajów cząstek. W poprzednim akceleratorze LEP lub w Fermilabie korzystającym z Tewatronu zastosowano podobne rozwiązanie, mające głównie na celu wykrycie i identyfikację jak największej ilości cząstek powstałych jednakże detektor ATLAS to konstrukcja, z racji użytych w akceleratorze energii, bezprecedensowa.

Atlas geograficzny - zbiór map, wydany zazwyczaj w postaci książkowej, a obecnie także w postaci multimedialnej (np. atlasy na CD-ROM-ach). Nazwa "atlas" nawiązuje do mitologicznej postaci Atlasa, który dźwigał na swoich barkach Ziemię - jego wyobrażenie było często umieszczane na stronach tytułowych atlasów. Użycie tego terminu sięga XVI wieku, gdy pojawił się w tytule dzieła Merkatora Atlas Sive Cosmographicae (Atlas albo Opisanie Świata) z lat 1585-1595. Najwcześniejszy atlas to Geografia Ptolemeusza, pochodzący z około 150 r. n.e. Za pierwszy nowoczesny atlas można uznać wydany 20 maja 1570 Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Orteliusa.

ATLAS (AToroidal LHC ApparatuS) è uno dei cinque rivelatori di particelle (ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, TOTEM e LHCb) che sono attualmente in costruzione all'LHC, il nuovo acceleratore di particelle al CERN in Svizzera. Quando sarà completato, ATLAS sarà lungo 46 metri con un diametro di 25 metri e peserà circa 7,000 tonnellate. Al progetto partecipano approssimativamente 2000  scienziati ed ingegneri, divisi tra 165 istituti e in 35 nazioni. La fine della costruzione è programmata per Giugno 2007. L'esperimento è progettato per osservare fenomeni che riguardano particelle pesanti che non sono mai state osservate usando gli attuali acceleratori a più bassa energia e per far luce su nuove teorie di fisica delle particelle oltre il Modello Standard.
