Der Heilige Berg Athos (, ; im Griechischen meist , , „Heiliger Berg“) ist eine orthodoxe Mönchsrepublik mit autonomem Status unter griechischer Souveränität in Griechenland. Er befindet sich auf dem gleichnamigen östlichen Finger der Halbinsel in der Verwaltungsregion Zentralmakedonien in der Region Makedonien. Das Territorium umfasst 336 km² und zählt rund 2000 (mönchische) Einwohner, zuzüglich einer saisonal wechselnden Zahl von zivilen Arbeitern. Im Sprachgebrauch bezeichnet der Begriff „(Berg) Athos“ entweder die ganze Halbinsel Athos mit dem Mönchsstaat oder auch nur den eigentlichen Berg an der Südost-Spitze der Halbinsel, der mit seinen 2.033 Metern Höhe der höchste Punkt der  Ägäis ist.

Athos (we współczesnym języku greckim Άγιο Όρος, w grece starożytnej ) jest symbolem prawosławnego ruchu monastycznego. W Grecji, na wschodnim cyplu Półwyspu Chalcydyckiego, znajduje się Góra Athos (2033 m n.p.m.), która jest miejscem świętym i stolicą atoskiego monastycyzmu - Karei. Długość: 60 km Szerokość: 7-12 km Powierzchnia: 390 km²Tylko mnisi mogą mieszkać w Athos i obecnie liczba mieszkańców wynosi ok. 2250 osób. Turyści na terenie Athosu mogą przebywać maksymalnie 3 dni. Po upływie tego czasu mogą ubiegać się o przedłużenie pobytu o dodatkowe kilka dni. Na terenie Athosu bardzo niemile widziani są katolicy. Od 1060 roku na terenie półwyspu nie mogą przebywać kobiety (nawet zwierzęta hodowlane na wyspie są tylko płci męskiej). W Athosie mnisi żyją w surowych warunkach, nierzadko w odosobnieniu. Trudnią się m.in. handlem.
