Atatürk International Airport is the main international airport serving Istanbul, Turkey (followed by Sabiha Gökçen International Airport). Opened in 1924 and located in Yesilköy, on the European side of the city, it is west of the city centre. In 1980, the airport was renamed to Atatürk International Airport in honor of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder and the first president of the Republic of Turkey. With total passenger traffic of more than 37 millions for the year 2011, it was the 29th busiest airport in the world in terms of total passenger traffic and the  17th busiest in the world in terms of international passenger traffic, ranking slightly below Rome's FCO and New York's JFK airports. It was Europe's 8th busiest airport in 2011, with a very slight difference in traffic between IST and the 6th, 7th airports, Munich, Rome.

Der Atatürk-Flughafen (früher Yesilköy International Airport) (IATA: IST, ICAO: LTBA) ist ein internationaler Flughafen in der türkischen Stadt Istanbul. Der Flughafen wurde nach dem Staatsgründer und erstem Präsident Mustafa Kemal Atatürk benannt und ist der größte in der Türkei. Istanbul-Atatürk liegt im europäischen Teil der Metropole im Stadtteil Yesilköy (einst San Stefano), welcher 24 km südwestlich von der Stadtmitte entfernt ist. Mit über 28 Millionen Passagieren im Jahr 2008 gehört der Flughafen zu den größten 40 Flughäfen weltweit.
