Atabal is a modern
Puerto Rican folk group that intermixes
Afro and
Latin-American rhythms and percussion. Musically speaking, Atabal is best described as the direct influence of Africa in the Caribbean.
Salsa,
calypso,
danzón,
plena and
bomba are just some of the rhythms that appear in this Puerto Rican group. They placed
drums as the forefront musical element in all their works and recordings. Today they have also integrated other instruments like the Puerto Rican
cuatro, a
guitar, a
bass, a
trumpet, and a
saxophone. To complete their unique sound, considered by critics as both traditional and modern, they use voices in
harmony when presenting their songs accompanied by all these instruments as well as when they sing
a cappella. Atabal has traveled extensively for 17 years throughout
Central and
South America,
Europe and the
United States. They have also participated in concerts with
El Gran Combo, Los Papines,
Andy Montañez,
Giovanni Hidalgo, Un solo pueblo, Tata Guines,
Franco de Vita,
José José, and many others.
