Assouan

Aswan (Egyptian: Swenet (=trade); Coptic: Swān; Greek: Syene; Aswān; Spanish: Asuán) (, population 200,000) is a city in the south of Egypt, the capital of the Aswan Governorate. It stands on the east bank of the Nile at the first cataract and is a busy market and tourist center.Aswan is one of the driest inhabited places in the world; as of early 2001, the last rain there was 6 years earlier. As of 13 October 2007, the last rainfall was a thunderstorm on May 13 2006. In Nubian settlements, they generally do not bother to roof all of the rooms in their houses.

Assuan (, Eswan für das Tor; das antike Syene, ägyptisch swn.w, Koptisch ⲥⲟⲩⲁⲛ) ist eine Stadt am rechten Nilufer unterhalb des ersten Kataraktes in Ägypten, 106 m ü. NN., mit etwa 220.000 Einwohnern (2002) die südlichste Stadt des eigentlichen Ägypten. Außerdem ist Assuan die Hauptstadt des gleichnamigen Gouvernements. Da man im Altertum bemerkte, dass die Sonne am längsten Tag in Syene keinen Schatten warf, zog man hier den Wendekreis des Krebses, der heute etwa 60 km weiter südlich liegt.

Asuan - miasto na południu Egiptu i zarazem stolica gubernatorstwa o tej samej nazwie. Miasto położone jest na wschodnim wybrzeżu Nilu, przy pierwszej katarakcie i jest z tego powodu celem wycieczek oraz ważnym centrum lokalnej turystyki.W pobliżu, znajduje się starożytny kamieniołom sjenitu (czerwonego granitu), w którym znaleziono fragmenty rzeźb i nieukończony największy obelisk. Powyżej, na Nilu zbudowano Wysoką Tamę. Spiętrzenie wód doprowadziłoby do bezpowrotnego zniszczenia zabytków w Abu Simbel i na wyspie File. Dzięki pomocy UNESCO zabytki zostały przeniesione w wyżej położone miejsca. Poniżej Wysokiej Tamy, czyli bliżej samego miasta Asuan, znajduje się zbudowana na początku XX wieku Tama Asuańska, starsza i niższa od Wysokiej.
