Assistive technology

Assistive Technology (AT) is a generic term that includes assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices and the process used in selecting, locating, and using them. AT promotes greater independence for people with disabilities by enabling them to perform tasks that they were formerly unable to accomplish, or had great difficulty accomplishing, by providing enhancements to or changed methods of interacting with the technology needed to accomplish such tasks. According to disability advocates, technology is often created without regard to people with disabilities, creating unnecessary barriers to hundreds of millions of people.

Im Bereich der Rehabilitation sind Hilfsmittel "Gegenstände, die im Einzelfall erforderlich sind, um den Erfolg einer Krankenbehandlung zu sichern, einer drohenden Behinderung vorzubeugen oder eine Behinderung auszugleichen, soweit sie nicht als allgemeine Gebrauchsgegenstände des täglichen Lebens anzusehen sind" (nach Sozialgesetzbuch SGB V § 33).

Technologie asystujące (technologie dla niepełnosprawnych) - szeroka klasa technologii umożliwiających większą niezależność osób niepełnosprawnych.Uniwersalne technologie, dostępne dla osób sprawnych i niepełnosprawnych, prowadzą często do lepszych rozwiązań inżynieryjnych. Typowym przykładem są krawężniki przy przejściach dla pieszych. Odpowiednio zbudowane umożliwiają łatwy przejazd osób niepełnosprawnych na wózkach inwalidzkich, ale ułatwiają też łatwy przejazd osób prowadzących wózek dziecięcy lub jadących na rowerze.
