Asmara

Asmara (English) (Ge'ez: አሥመራ Asmera, formerly known as Asmera, or in Asmaraa) is the capital city and largest settlement in Eritrea, home to a population of around 579,000 people. At an elevation of over 2,000 meters (7000 ft), Asmara is on the edge of an escarpment that is both the northwestern edge of the Great Rift Valley and of the Eritrean highlands. Textiles and clothing, processed meat, beer, shoes, and ceramics are the major industrial products. Asmara started with four villages, to being a regional center under Emperor Yohannes IV of Ethiopia, to "Little Rome" of Mussolini's unsuccessful second Roman Empire, to being a provincial capital under Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia and lastly a national capital of Eritrea

Asmara (Tigré für in Frieden leben) ist die Hauptstadt von Eritrea mit etwa 579.000 Einwohnern, sie liegt in ca. 2.300 Meter Höhe über Normalnull.Die heutige Großstadt war bis in die 1880er ein kleines Dorf und wurde damals – unter Kaiser Johannes IV. und Ras Alula – Hauptstadt der äthiopischen Provinz Hamasen. 1889 wurde es von den Italienern besetzt, die es 1900 anstelle von Massawa zur Hauptstadt der italienischen Kolonie Eritrea machten. Nach der Besatzung Äthiopiens verlor Asmara ihre Rolle als Hauptstadt ihres Landes und übernahm erst 1993, mit der Unabhängigkeit Eritreas, ihr Amt wieder.

È anche capoluogo della Regione Centrale.Sorge su un altopiano ad oltre 2.300 m s.l.m. e gode di un clima particolarmente mite e salubre (la temperatura media annua è di circa 17° C). Sede universitaria, ospita industrie tessili, dell'abbigliamento e della lavorazione della carne.
