Ashur-Dan III

Ashur-dan III was King of Assyria from 773 to 755 BC.Ashur-dan III was the son of Adad-nirari III, and succeeded his brother Shalmaneser IV in 773 BC. Ashur-dan's reign was a difficult age for the Assyrian monarchy. The rulership was severely limited by the influence of court dignitaries, particularly that of Shamshi-ilu, who was the commander-in-chief (turtanu). According to the eponym canon, in 765 BC Assyria was hit by a plague, and the following year the king could not campaign (it was customary for the Assyrian king to lead a military expedition every year). In 763 BC a revolt broke out, which lasted until 759 BC, when another plague hit the land. His reign and the reigns of preceding Assyrian kings have been astronomically dated based on the only verifiable reference to a solar eclipse in Assyrian chronicles, the so-called eclipse of Bur Sagale. Ashur-dan was succeeded by another brother, Ashur-nirari V.

Assur-dan III. war König von Assyrien in den Jahren ca. 771 v. Chr.-754 v. Chr. (alternative Datierung: 773 v. Chr.-755 v. Chr.).Assur-dan III. war der Sohn von Adad-nirari III. und folgte seinem Bruder Salmanassar IV. auf dem Thron. Seine Herrschaft (wie auch noch die seines Nachfolgers und Bruders Assur-nirari V.) war durch den Einfluss mächtiger Adliger, vor allem des Oberbefehlshabers des Heeres, Schamschi-ilu, begrenzt. Nach den Chroniken blieb er 768 und 764 "im Land", unternahm also keine Feldzüge, was als Hinweis auf innenpolitische Schwierigkeiten gewertet wird. In das neunte Jahr seiner Herrschaft fällt der Ausbruch einer Epidemie, gefolgt von einer Rebellion im eigenen Land (zw. 763-758), die etwa vier Jahre andauerte und an deren Ende eine weitere Seuche Assyrien heimsuchte.

Aszurdan III (lub Assur-dan III)– władca Asyrii w latach 771-754 p.n.e.. Był drugim synem Adadnirariego III. Walczył z plemionami aramejskimi. W okresie jego rządów odnotowano w kronikach informację o zaćmieniu słońca, co pozwoliło uczonym na opracowanie chronologii asyryjskiej już w XIX wieku.

O reino de Ashur-dan III atravessou uma época difícil, o poder do rei foi muito limitado pela pela influência dos dignitário da corte, particularmente pela influência de Shamshi-ilu, que era o comandante-em-chefe (turtanu). Foi pai de Tiglath-pileser III.
