[], with [z] rather than with [] as in Tzar; also יְהוּדֵי אַשְׁכֲּנָז Yehudei Ashkenaz, "the Jews of Ashkenaz"), are descended from the medieval Jewish communities of the Rhineland. "Ashkenaz" is the Medieval Hebrew name for Germany.
