Ashdod

Ashdod (; , Isdud), located in the Southern District of Israel, on the Mediterranean Sea coast, is a city of over 200,000 people located approximately from Jerusalem and Beer Sheba. Ashdod is an important regional industrial center. The Port of Ashdod is Israel's largest port accounting for sixty percent of the country's imported goods. The first documented settlement in Ashdod dates to the Canaanite culture of 17th century BC, making the city one of the most ancient in the world. Ashdod is mentioned thirteen times in the Bible. During the history the city was settled by Philistines, Israelites, Byzantines, Crusaders and Arabs.

Ashdod (en hébreu אַשְׁדּוֹד, en arabe إسدود ʾIsdūd) est la cinquième plus grande ville et le second port d'Israël (après Haïfa). Située sur la plaine du littoral à mi-chemin entre Tel Aviv et Gaza, dans le district Sud d'Israël, Elle est à 35 km de Tel Aviv, à 5 km de Ashkelon et à 70 km de Jérusalem et Beer-Sheva. C'est une ville très dynamique et qui a eu une croissance récente très rapide, notamment grâce à l'apport de nouveaux immigrants en provenance de France, d'Éthiopie, de Russie et d'Amérique latine.

Ashdod is een havenstad en badplaats in het westen van Israël, gelegen aan de Middellandse Zee.De stad ligt ongeveer 41 kilometer ten zuidwesten van Tel Aviv, en 33 kilometer ten noordoosten van Ashkelon. In december 2007 had deze ongeveer 207.300 inwoners en was daarmee de vijfde stad van Israël. Ashdod is ook een van de steden met de grootste bevolkingsgroei van het land. Het heeft bovendien de derde charedische gemeenschap in grootte van Israël (na Jeruzalem en Bene Beraq) en de grootste gemeenschap van Georgische Joden ter wereld.
