Ascension (Stargate)

In the science fiction television series Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, Ascension is a process by which sufficiently-evolved sentient beings may shed their physical bodies and live eternally as pure energy on a higher plane of existence full of knowledge and power.It is a mental, spiritual or evolutionary enlightenment that can arise as the direct result of achieving a certain level of wisdom and self-knowledge. Ascension was also employed by the ancients as a means to avoid a number of issues threatening their species with extinction.This process has in other contexts been referred to as transcorporeal migration, and as presented in Stargate SG-1 is actually a staple of some elements of real-world contemporary spiritual belief. The concept of ascension as the ultimate endstate of all men was discussed over 120 years ago, by American religious leader, and founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy in her book 1879 work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, and also can be found in a theological/philosopical movement, Theosophy, that would later borrow this and other concepts from Eddy as well as from Eastern philosophies and which includes the belief that a number of other historical figures besides Christ are supposed to have undergone this process. From Christian Science, and element of Theosophy the condept has become part of many New Age beliefs. It is essentially the process which the main characters of James Redfield's book The Celestine Prophecy were depicted as undergoing at the climax of that story; in that book, the early Mayan civilisation were fictitiously depicted as having Ascended.

PrincipeDans la série télévisée Stargate, l'Ascension est un évènement qu'un mourant fort évolué psychiquement peut accomplir seul (c’est-à-dire lorsque 96% de son cerveau est utilisé). Cet évènement peut aussi être aidé par des personnes ayant fait l'Ascension (comme ce fut le cas de Daniel Jackson). Au lieu de mourir, les personnes ayant fait l'ascension deviennent de l'énergie pure et ne conservent donc pas leur forme matérielle originelle. Elles accèdent ainsi à un plan d'existence supérieur au nôtre.Dans notre galaxie, une personne ayant fait l'ascension n'a plus le droit d'intervenir avec les peuples n'ayant pas fait l'ascension. Elle n'a donc pas le droit d'intervenir avec un plan d'existence inférieur. Si elle tente d'intervenir, elle est renvoyée sous forme humaine une fois sa mémoire effacée (habituellement) car les Anciens (les êtres de notre galaxie qui ont effectué l'ascension) ne souhaitent pas qu'à cause de leur interventions, les êtres n'ayant pas effectué leur ascension les vénèrent comme des dieux (voir l'épisode SG-1 9.11).Mais les Ori, contrairement aux Anciens, cherchent à tout prix à obtenir l'énergie spirituelle des êtres n'ayant pas effectué leur ascension en intervenant sur eux par l'intermédiaire des Prêcheurs (voir l'épisode SG-1 9.11).
