Artificial insemination (AI) is the deliberate introduction of semen into a female for the purpose of fertilisation, by means other than ejaculation directly into the vagina or oviduct.

Sperm donation is the provision (or ‘donation’) by a man, (known as a ‘sperm donor’), of his sperm, with the intention that it be used to impregnate a woman who is not his sexual partner. While the sperm donor is the natural or biological father of every child produced as a result of his donations, he is generally not intended to be the legal or de jure father. Depending on the jurisdiction and its laws, he may or may not later be eligible to seek parental rights or be held responsible for parental obligations.

Als Insemination wird jede Übertragung des männlichen Samens in den Genitaltrakt der Frau oder eines weiblichen Tieres bezeichnet, die nicht über den Weg der Kopulation erfolgt. Hierbei kann es zu einer Befruchtung kommen oder auch nicht. Insemination ist die gängigste Methode zur künstlichen Befruchtung.

C'est Lazzaro Spallanzani qui en Europe a découvert et décrit la fécondation d'ovules par des spermatozoïdes et qui fut le premier à réaliser une insémination artificielle (chez le chien).
Elle a été perfectionnée au début du XXième siècle par des vétérinaires et des scientifiques, et commencée à être utilisée couramment à partir des années 1940. Elle est à l'origine utilisée pour l'amélioration des races bovines, avant de voir son champ d'applications étendu à d'autres espèces, dont l'espèce humaine (pour laquelle elle permet de remédier à certains cas d'infertilité). Le terme est utilisé dès 1936 par Lucien Cuénot et Jean Rostand dans leur livre Introduction à la génétique. Il est formé par dérivation du latin inseminare « semer dans, répandre dans, féconder ».

Insemination är ett sätt att genom artificiell placering av sperma i livmodern försöka åstadkomma befruktning. Metoden utvecklades ursprungligen för befruktning av kor och är vanligt förekommande inom husdjursavel.

Kunstmatige inseminatie (KI) is een techniek om tot een bevruchting te komen wanneer de bevruchting niet door de geslachtsgemeenschap tot stand komt. Het woord inseminatie verwijst naar het woord semen, dat zaad betekent. Bij kunstmatige inseminatie wordt er sperma in de baarmoeder of baarmoederhals gebracht.
