Art Pepper
Art Pepper (September 1 1925June 151982) born Arthur Edward Pepper, Jr. in Gardena, California, was an American cool jazz alto saxophonist. He began his musical career in the 1940s playing with Benny Carter and Stan Kenton. In the 1950s Pepper became one of the leading lights of West Coast jazz along with Chet BakerGerry MulliganShelly Manne, and others. Arthur was born in Gardena, California, but lived for many years in the hills of Echo Park, in Los Angeles. He became a heroin addict in the 1940s, and his career was interrupted by drug-related prison sentences in the 1950s and 1960s. In the late 1960s he spent time in Synanon, a drug rehabilitation group at that time. After beginning methadone therapy in the mid-1970s, Art had a musical comeback and recorded a series of highly acclaimed albums.

Arthur Edward „Art“ Pepper (* 1. September 1925 in GardenaKalifornien; † 1. Juni 1982 in Panorama City, Kalifornien) war ein US-amerikanischer Altsaxophonist. Pepper war einer der bedeutendsten Altsaxophonisten des Jazz in der Nachfolge von Charlie Parker, erlag aber nicht dessen damaligen Einfluss, sondern verschmolz eigene Vorstellungen mit Einflüssen von Benny CarterZoot Sims und Lester Young.

Biografia Art Pepper è stato una sorta di leggenda nel panorama jazz degli anni Cinquanta. La sua musica, influenzata agli inizi da Charlie Parker, seppe poi trovare una strada e un suono proprio. Art Pepper esordisce suonando con band di colore a Los Angeles. Viene scritturato dall'orchestra di Benny Carter e poi da quella di Stan Kenton (1947-1952). In questo periodo incominciano i problemi con la droga.

Art Pepper

Hij begon zijn muzikale carrière in de jaren 40 van de 20e eeuw, waarin hij speelde met Benny Carter en Stan Kenton. In de jaren 50 werd Pepper een van de toonaangevende muzikanten van de West Coast Jazz, samen met trompetist Chet Bakerbaritonsaxofonist Gerry Mulligan, drummer Shelly Manne en anderen.
