Art Déco

Art Deco was a popular design movement from 1920 until 1939, affecting the decorative arts such as architecture, interior design, and industrial design, as well as the visual arts such as fashion, painting, the graphic arts, and film. This movement was, in a sense, an amalgam of many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, Bauhaus, Art Nouveau, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked during the Roaring Twenties. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative. At the time, this style was seen as elegant, functional, and ultra modern.

Im Jahre 1925 wurde eine Ausstellung in Paris unter dem Namen „Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes“ durchgeführt, deren Titel später für den dort vorherrschend gezeigten Stil übernommen wurde: „Art Déco“. Die Ausstellung ging zurück auf eine Initiative führender französischer Künstler, die 1901 die „Société des Artistes Décorateurs“ gegründet hatten, und war ursprünglich, durch den 1. Weltkrieg verzögert, schon für 1915 geplant.

Art déco – styl w sztuce: architekturze, malarstwie, grafice oraz w architekturze wnętrz, rozpowszechniony w latach 1920–1940. Nazwa wywodzi się od francuskiego art – sztuka i décoratif – dekoracyjny, w rozumieniu jakie język polski łączy z urządzaniem wnętrz (czyli "dekorowaniem"); termin décoratif nie oznacza w tym wypadku "zdobienia".
