Judah (Yehudah, Heb. יהודה) Aristobulus I (reigned 104–103 BC), the first ruler of the Hebrew Hasmonean Dynasty to call himself "king," was the eldest of the five sons of John Hyrcanus, the previous leader. Josephus would declare him the first Jew in 481 years to “wear the diadem on his head” (Ant. xiii, 301). According to Jewish tradition, only descendants of Judah, or, more specifically, the House of David, were qualified to be kings of Israel, so all of Aristobulus' predecessors used the title of "nasi"/"president".

Arystobul I zwany Filhellenem (zm. 103 p.n.e.) - władca Judei i arcykapłan od 104 p.n.e. z dynastii Hasmoneuszy, przybrał tytuł królewski.

Aristobulus I
Aristobulus I volgde in 104 v.Chr. zijn vader Johannes Hyrcanus op als koning en hogepriester van de Joodse Hasmoneese staat. Zijn Hebreeuwse naam is Juda of Judas, maar in de geschiedenis is hij vrijwel uitsluitend onder zijn Griekse naam Aristobulus bekend. Hij was getrouwd met Salome Alexandra.

Eigenlijk was het de bedoeling van zijn vader geweest dat hij na zijn dood door zijn vrouw opgevolgd zou worden en dat Aristobulus (de oudste van Hyrcanus' vijf zonen) alleen het ambt van hogepriester zou bekleden. Aristobulus nam daar echter geen genoegen mee en zette zijn moeder en drie van zijn broers gevangen. Zijn moeder overleed tijdens deze gevangenschap. Alleen zijn broer Antigonus, de oudste van zijn vier jongere broers, op wie hij zeer gesteld was, behield zijn vrijheid.

אריסטובולוס הראשון, הידוע גם בשם יהודה אריסטובולוס (מת 103 לפנה"ס) - מלך יהודה והכהן הגדול בין השנים 103-104 לפני ספירת הנוצרים, היה בנו הבכור של יוחנן הורקנוס.
