Arcus zygomaticus

The zygomatic arch is formed by the zygomatic process of temporal bone (a bone extending forward from the side of the skull, over the opening of the ear) and the temporal process of the zygomatic (the side of the cheekbone), the two being united by an oblique suture; the tendon of the Temporalis passes medial to the arch to gain insertion into the coronoid process of the mandible.

The zygomatic bone (malar bone) is a paired bone of the human skull. It articulates with the maxilla, the temporal bone, the sphenoid bone and the frontal bone. It forms part of the orbit and is commonly referred to as the cheekbone. It is situated at the upper and lateral part of the face: it forms the prominence of the cheek, part of the lateral wall and floor of the orbit, and parts of the temporal and infratemporal fossae [Fig. 1]. It presents a malar and a temporal surface; four processes, the frontosphenoidal, orbital, maxillary, and temporal; and four borders.

Der Jochbogen (lat. Arcus zygomaticus) ist eine kräftige knöcherne Leiste des Schädels bei Säugetieren. Er beginnt unterhalb der Augenhöhle und zieht horizontal in Richtung Ohr. Der Jochbogen ist am lebenden Individuum gut durch die Haut tastbar.Der Jochbogen setzt sich aus zwei Fortsätzen zusammen. Der Schläfenbeinfortsatz des Jochbeins (Processus temporalis ossis zygomatici) bildet den vorderen Abschnitt, der Jochbeinfortsatz des Schläfenbeins (Processus zygomaticus ossis temporalis) den hinteren. Beide Fortsätze sind durch eine schräge Knochennaht miteinander verbunden. Oberhalb des äußeren Gehörgangs setzt sich der Jochbogen in eine seichte Knochenleiste (Crista supramastoidea) auf der Schläfenbeinschuppe fort. Vom Schläfenbeinfortsatz zieht etwa rechtwinklig noch der Stirnfortsatz des Jochbeins (Processus frontalis ossis zygomatici) nach oben, welcher die Augenhöhle hinten begrenzt. Bei Fleischfressern ist dieser Fortsatz nur sehr kurz und vereinigt sich nicht mit dem Jochbeinfortsatz des Stirnbeins (Processus zygomaticus ossis frontalis).
