Arctic
The Arctic is the
region around the
Earth's
North Pole, opposite the
Antarctic region around the
South Pole. In the
northern hemisphere, the Arctic includes the
Arctic Ocean (which overlies the North Pole) and parts of
Canada,
Greenland (a territory of
Denmark),
Russia, the
United States (
Alaska),
Iceland,
Norway,
Sweden and
Finland. The word Arctic comes from the Greek word arktos (αρκτως) , which means bear. This is due to the location of the constellation (a group of stars)
Ursa Major, the "Great Bear", above the Arctic region.

L’Arctique est la région entourant le
pôle Nord de la
Terre, à l’intérieur et aux abords du
cercle polaire Nord. C'est la région où vivent les ours polaires. Elle s'oppose à l'
Antarctique, au Sud où il n'y a pas d'ours. L'Arctique comprend 5 pays, ceux dont les côtes sont au contact de l'océan Arctique soit : le Canada, les Etats-Unis (avec l'Alaska), le Danemark (par le Groenland), la Russie et la Norvège (et non les autres pays scandinaves).

północ wysuniętym obszarem
Ziemi otaczającym
biegun północny. Jej granice określa się w różny sposób. Według definicji klimatyczno-ekologicznej wyznacza ją lipcowa izoterma +10°C, która z grubsza stanowi również północną granicę drzew. Według innej, Arktykę ogranicza
koło podbiegunowe północne, co jednak sprawia, że w jej obrębie znajdują się również duże obszary Norwegii i Szwecji o dość umiarkowanym klimacie. Arktyka obejmuje część
Rosji,
Kanady,
Norwegii,
Szwecji,
Finlandii,
Alaskę (Stany Zjednoczone),
Grenlandię (terytorium duńskie),
Islandię oraz
Ocean Arktyczny.
