Germany is one of the world's most highly developed market economies. It is the world's third largest economy in USD exchange-rate terms, the fifth largest by purchasing power parity (PPP), and the largest economy in Europe.Although recent performance has been dynamic, due to a strong world economy, the German economy is marked by domestic structural problems, and continued difficulties in fuelling formerly communist East Germany.Competition and free enterprise are promoted as a matter of government policy. However, the state intervenes in the economy through the provision of subsidies to selected sectors and the partial ownership of enterprises in sectors of strategic importance .

L'Allemagne est en 2007 la quatrième puissance économique mondiale, derrière les États-Unis, le Japon, la Chine et la première de l'Union européenne et de l'Europe, avec un Produit intérieur brut de de dollars. Cependant, en parité de pouvoir d'achat, l'Allemagne est cinquième derrière la Chine et l’Inde. Elle est aussi le plus grand exportateur mondial de biens devant les États-Unis et la Chine avec 969 milliards d'euros (+8,5%) de biens exportés en 2007, et un excédent commercial de 199 milliards d'euros. En classement par PIB en PPA, l’Allemagne est le 5 pays.

Die Bundesagentur für Arbeit (BA, ehemals Bundesanstalt für Arbeit) ist das Verwaltungsorgan, das in Deutschland für die Arbeitsvermittlung und -förderung sowie die Leistungsgewährung unter anderem des Arbeitslosengeldes zuständig ist. Sie ist eine bundesunmittelbare Körperschaft des öffentlichen Rechts mit Selbstverwaltung und Anstaltscharakter. Sie unterliegt der Rechtsaufsicht durch das Bundesministerium für Arbeit und Soziales (§ 393 Abs. 1 SGB III). Nur in bestimmten Bereichen hat das Ministerium ein Weisungsrecht und führt die Fachaufsicht, z. B. bei der Arbeitsmarktstatistik (§ 283 Abs. 2 SGB III) und der Ausländerbeschäftigung (§ 288 Abs. 2 SGB III).
