Arabah

The Arabah (, Tiberian: , Hebrew Academy: ; Arabic: وادي عربه ) is a section of the Great Rift Valley lying between the Dead Sea to the north and the Gulf of Aqaba or the Gulf of Eilat to the south. It forms part of the border between Israel to the west and Jordan to the east.The Arabah is 166 km (103 miles) long from the Gulf of Aqaba to the southern shore of the Dead Sea. Topographically, the region is divided into three sections. From the Gulf of Aqaba northward, the land gradually rises for 77 km (48 miles), reaching a height of 230 m (755 feet) above sea level. From this height at the Dead Sea/Red Sea watershed divide, the land gradually slopes down to a point 15 km south of the Dead Sea. From there, the Arabah drops sharply to meet the Dead Sea, which at 417 m (1373 feet) below sea level is the lowest point on earth.

L'Arabah (en hébreu : הָֽעֲרָבָה translittéré Ha'Arava, en hébreu tibérien : HāʻĂrāḇā, en arabe : وادي عرب translittéré Wādī ʻAraba) est une partie de la vallée du grand rift située entre la mer Morte au nord et le golfe d'Aqaba au sud. Aravá (en hebreo Aravá עֲרָבָה, "sabana, desierto"), también llamado Araba (en árabe, Al-'Araba العربة) es un valle situado en Asia occidental, en la región del Medio Oriente. Discurre durante 166 km entre la costa meridional del Mar Muerto y el Golfo de Eilat-Aqaba, en el Mar Rojo. Sirve de frontera entre el desierto del Néguev de Israel y el sur de Jordania. En la Biblia fue lugar de paso de los hebreos en su Éxodo de Egipto , y es llamado también «Valle de la Sal» .

הערבה (באנגלית: Arabah, בערבית: وادي عربه) היא עמק צר וארוך המשתרע מדרום ים המלח ועד מפרץ אילת ומפריד בין הרי אדום ממזרח ובין הר הנגב ממערב. הערבה מקבילה לקו הגבול בין ירדן לישראל. השם קדום (נזכר בתיאור נדידתם של בני ישראל בצאתם ממצרים) ופירושו אזור שומם ויבש, נרדף למדבר. מקורות המים בערבה מועטים. בכמה מקומות, יש בערבה מחצבי נחושת ומחצבים אחרים, אך עיקר חשיבותה כאזור מעבר. יש אנשים המכנים את אילת כבירת אזור הערבה, משום שהיא המרכז הכלכלי והעסקי של יישובי הערבה.מימים קדומים עברו בה דרכים חשובות ממרכז הארץ ומהר הנגב אל מפרץ אילת ואל עבר הירדן מזרחה. בימי השופטים שלטו בה בני אדום עד שנכבשה בידי דוד המלך. שלמה המלך הקים נמל באילת וחצב נחושת בערבה. משנתפרדה הממלכה, חזרו בני אדום והשתלטו על הערבה, עד שסולקו על ידי הנבטים. בתחילתה של המאה ה-2 השתלטו הנבטים על הערבה וגם הקימו בה מבצרים ותחנות משמר לאבטחת הדרכים והאזור. אחרי הכיבוש הערבי והתנוונותן של מדינות האזור, איבדה גם הערבה את חשיבותה כמעט עד ימינו. הערבה נכללה במדינת ישראל בעקבות מבצע עובדה במלחמת העצמאות ומאז עלתה חשיבותה מחדש.
